Modern Oceanographic Disciplines
Modern oceanography is a combination of several fields of science, and it is conventionally divided into the subdisciplines of physical, chemical, biological, and geological oceanography.

The first major scientific expedition, and the one that firmly established the field of oceanography, was the around-the-world voyage of H.M.S. Challenger. Setting out from England in 1872, the Challenger Expedition returned three years and five months later with a wealth of information on the physical and chemical characteristics of seawater and bottom sediments, as well as the first comprehensive data on the distribution of organic life at all water depths and on the seafloor.
